… because entrepreneurs need to have fun too! ROFLcon is a conference all about internet culture and memes. Last night I cracked. I bit the bullet and signed up while at a bar on my iPhone. If you have no idea about these types of things, you’ve probably missed out on the following:

Bootstrapping is generally applied to self-funding your startup. However, you can use the principle to apply to any facet of your life. Bootstrapping helps you identify and eliminate waste. It forces you to make hard decisions on what’s really important and what isn’t. Whether you’re starting a business, trying to get your finances in order or save for retirement. There are times when anyone will want to bootstrap.

Where to cut back

I can’t stop my hair growing. As hard as I will it to stop, my hair keeps on trucking. To prevent myself looking like Cousin Itt’s twin brother, I need to take care of it. That generally means going to get a haircut. I’ve gone to chinatown in boston to save a few bucks, but the guy didnt speak english and I ended up with a great fade, but a terrible haircut. I’ve also gone to newbury st. but ended up with a mediocre haircut for a big price. It’s really not that hard to cut a guys hair. So, my buddy Ben “Le Coiffure” Winterroth does it for me. It’s a great way to save some loot. There are times however, that going the cheap route is not better.

Where to spend top dollar

Ramen is not nutrition. Say it with me Ramen is not nutrition. Food is one area where I will never try to be cheap. The picture to the left is my dinner from Friday. Chicken breast with broccoli and spinach-carrot salad. My diet might change when I’m in Argentina, but in general I buy organic, and cook dinner at home. If you try it for a week, I guarantee you’ll notice the difference in your alertness, happiness and overall well-being.

These are just a couple of suggestions for how to and how not to bootstrap. What are the things you would never give up to save some cash?

That’s the hope… here’s the first glimpse of Gossipr, the first ultra-viral facebook application by me and my buddy Dan Choi.

We’re expecting to do a quiet release in the next few days… working hard at night to make it happen. As a bonus for adding the app, you get access to an embarrassing story about me – you have to be my friend first though. Talk about eating my own dogfood!

Going’s Naughty Party

Going has a facebook application called Naughty Gifts. At first they were unsure if they wanted to associate their brand with the application. Now they’ve gone full out! It’s naughty gifts in real life. They’re hosting the naughty party in Boston on the day before halloween – the 30th October at 10pm. If you’ve got a flithy mind and like to party, this will be a killer event. Make sure to RSVP! Im going to be there. My interest is purely in how virtual communities can translate in to real communities and events

One in five facebook users set to receive stupid unicorn

For those of you living under a rock, facebook has virtual gifts that they sell. The gift for October 25th, a unicorn is set to a limit of 10,000,000 before it sells out. So, based on facebook’s october user numbers of 47,000,000 users, you have about a one in five chance of getting this stupid unicorn sent to you before stock runs out.

Assuming Facebook sells out of these gifts, and all purchasers buy them using the bulk discount ($5 for 10 gifts), facebook will take in a cool $5,000,000 (that’s $5 million for those bad with zeroes).

Does this kind of thing justify the rumored 500 million in investment that facebook just got on top of Microsoft’s $240 million facebook investment?

Minor celebrity meetup – Pradeep from “The Pickup Artist”

It was the funniest thing. I was in the office of a recruiter today. It was a good meeting. I left my mont-blanc there though, but that’s another story. When I came out – who is there, but Pradeep from “The Pickup Artist“, a reality show that was on VH1 this year.

He was portrayed pretty poorly on the show; mainly because he was vindictive and would do things to ruin his show-mates conversations with women. I asked him about this. He said that, he did do those things and the portrayal was pretty accurate. That was quite surprising! I don’t know how I run into these people!

Are you more afraid of Aids or Staph infections. Why not be afraid of both? You’re more likely to die of a crazy strain of staphylococcus. My roommate was telling me that it is resistant to antibiotics and if you get it, you are likely to die.

Im sitting at home for the rest of the year with my aluminum foil helmet on. How will you deal?

How to make money in self-destruction

I grabbed a book at the airport on my way down to DC. “I hope they serve beer in hell” by Tucker Max. This guy has made a (writing) career for himself out of screwing things up. Incredible! His stories of debauchery are really amusing and a great easy read. Most revolve around drunkenness, sex, defecation. They aren’t for the faint of heart. Read on for a passage from the book.

Here’s one of the few PGish passages from the book where one of the partners at the law firm at which he is interning is trying to have sex with him:

We get to the firm, and Brian and I get out of Sally’s car, and then she turns off the car and gets out herself. She looks up at the building (Fenwick has all of a ten story building in Palo Alto), then looks right at me and says, “It looks like I left the lights on in my office. I should probably go turn them off. What do you think?” I am oblivious to the implied meaning here, and look up and say, “Whatever, who cares–they’re halogen, it’ll cost like 3 cents for the night. Forget it.”

Sally gets a mildly frustrated look on her face, and still staring right at me, says, “I need to go up to my office and turn off my lights. Maybe you should come up there…help me out.” Did I ever mention how retarded I am when I get drunk? Well, I missed that signal too, “No, whatever, they’re fine, don’t worry about it.” She kind of pauses for a second, looks right into my eyes, and says, “DO YOU…want to come…HELP ME…turn off the lights…IN MY OFFICE?”
