I attended a talk at Harvard tonight by Lisa Stone of BlogHer entitiled “What Women Want”. Much of the time was focused on what women don’t want. This made her seem angry. Angry at the world for marginalizing women on the internet. Angry at Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for not doing an interview on camera with BlogHer (a lot of time was focused here). Im not sure what made her so angry, but it was a little offputting. She did throw in some great stats about how women are using the net.

Steve Garfield captured the event, so check out his 20 minute video if you’re curious.

I’ve dropped hints here and there. It’s an awesome new twist to my tale. It’s great experience and great fun. Im now working at Virosity

Virosity provides development and product management services for early stage start-ups. Our typical client has an idea, and access to funds but doesnt want to / have the connections to hire a full development team to get it done. That’s where we come in! We turn great ideas into reality.

Right now, my team is building good2gether. From good2gether:

good2gether is a new search and social web service that connects people to causes.
And it’s about to reinvent philanthropy.

So far, the good2gether experience has been really educational. Greg McHale is a great CEO. He spends more time on the road selling than anyone I know. Check out his blog to see what part of the country he is in today!

good2gether is a fantastic product. Im thrilled to be building it. Look for more on Virosity and good2gether soon.

As a side note, we’re looking for talented front end designers, and ruby on rails developers to add to the team. Our Boston launch date is fast approaching.

A few of us went down from Boston. Me, Mark Doerschlag, Andrew Mitchell and Todd Galloway. I hate to love Jason Fried. His and 37Signals philosophies align with mine. Use beautiful tools to create beautiful, simple things. Get rid of all the bullshit and focus on what’s really important to you and your customers.

I’ve criticised 37signals in the past, but must concede that software design is better off because of them.

37Signals flipped the software design process on its head. Start by using sharpies to draw an interface on paper. From there, start coding the HTML for the site. Iterate out until you have a finished product. You can read more about this process in their e-book Getting Real.

They develop exclusively on Ruby on Rails (RoR). 37Signals David Heinemeier Hansson (or DHH as he is known in the community) originally conceived and developed Rails. My current company Notati, built our Prayer Request social network, Prayabout on Rails. Rails also powers Radiant, a CMS I highly recommend.

This guy has made a (writing) career for himself out of screwing things up. Incredible! His stories of debauchery are really amusing and a great easy read. Most revolve around drunkenness, sex, defecation. They aren’t for the faint of heart. Read on for a passage from the book.

Here’s one of the few PGish passages from the book where one of the partners at the law firm at which he is interning is trying to have sex with him:

We get to the firm, and Brian and I get out of Sally’s car, and then she turns off the car and gets out herself. She looks up at the building (Fenwick has all of a ten story building in Palo Alto), then looks right at me and says, “It looks like I left the lights on in my office. I should probably go turn them off. What do you think?” I am oblivious to the implied meaning here, and look up and say, “Whatever, who cares–they’re halogen, it’ll cost like 3 cents for the night. Forget it.”

Sally gets a mildly frustrated look on her face, and still staring right at me, says, “I need to go up to my office and turn off my lights. Maybe you should come up there…help me out.” Did I ever mention how retarded I am when I get drunk? Well, I missed that signal too, “No, whatever, they’re fine, don’t worry about it.” She kind of pauses for a second, looks right into my eyes, and says, “DO YOU…want to come…HELP ME…turn off the lights…IN MY OFFICE?”

The criteria for shameless promotion is high. It’s about as high as the criteria for me calling you one of my friends. My friend Dan Grover at Wonderwarp Software just released version 1.0 of his new app Shovebox

Shovebox is great name, because that’s what the app is. It’s a box that you shove stuff in to. It competes in the same class of apps as Yojimbo and Eagle Filer. The Shovebox approach is to have a little box in the menu bar like you see below:

When you want to add something, drag and drop it to the box. Organize your notes and clippings later. Shovebox allows you to dump your brain when you get a thought or see something interesting. This allows you to focus on the activity at hand.

Basically, I use shovebox to store “stuff” and Actiontastic to store “things I need to do”. Shovebox is a great addition to my arsenal. I had been toying with Yojimbo, but couldn’t find a reason to justify the $40. $25 for Shovebox is easier to swallow.

Things I’d love to be able to store in Shovebox

Passwords (integration with keychain)

Serial Numbers

Web archive from firefox (only works w/ Safari now)

My friend Kristian is obsessed with Kristen Bell. He watches Veronica Mars with the sound off. He did however ignore my invitation to join Pownce (jerk). The thing i’m not quite sure of is why Leah wears sunglasses in all of her profile pictures?
