I’m going biking… for the next couple of months.

It has been a long time coming. I first publicized this trip in October, 2007 and have been preparing since.

How many products can you count that have not been replaced by newer, better ones? Is it possible to reach the limit where you cannot make a better widget? or hammer? or bicycle seat?

Maybe.

But so far, we’re not there yet. The best bicycle seats money can buy have been made by Brooks Saddles pretty much the same way since 1866. Their flagship model for first appeared in the 1898 catalog! Sure, the process has probably been improved, but the widget is pretty much the same.

I first learned about brooks saddles through people who have been touring the world by bike since 2002. They have much more experience than me and claimed it is the best bike seat. The people at the bike shop agree. When I asked a guy “would you ride across the country if you weren’t using your brooks saddle?” He said no.

In a world where newer is better. It’s refreshing to see something old be the best there is.

Update on cross-country biking

In october last year, I made the proclamation that I will bike from San Fran to Boston. Where are we on that? Maybe a little behind schedule, but on the way. It’s below freezing outside most days and often slushy. Hardly good biking weather. We had a stroke of good luck on the second last day of the year when we biked to Newport, Rhode Island. Ben and I are now training indoors on bicycle trainers. We even rearranged the living room so that we can bike and watch the tv. Now if only there was something good to watch!

Im working on getting sponsors and finding a great cause for us to ride in support of. We probably need to raise (or find?) around $6000 or so more to cover equipment and expenses.

I really can’t wait to get outside and start biking. How tall are the rockies?

P.s. Milo can’t come with us. He’s the cat in the picture. Milo and his sister need a new home. Does anyone want two lovable kitties?

Working out for both body and mind

I’ve started an exercise regiment for the cross country bike trip. Not only is exercise great for your physical health, but it is also great for your mental health. Stressed out? Exercise will fix it. Down in the dumps? Exercising releases endorphins. Feeling on top of the world? Exercise will make you feel higher! Here are some great exercise routines that I’ve found:

Unless you want to look like the incredible hulk, the key (as you will see in the previous two workouts is high intensity, high heart rate, lots of exercises and lots of reps. I guarantee that if you do these exercises, your positivity and your ability to focus on your startup will increase ten-fold (or your money back).

From San Francisco to Boston…

There has been a lot of criticism in the press recently about the startup scene in Boston. It seems that if you want to make it big, you move out to San Francisco. Facebook did it. Heck, my friend Lee moved from New York to San Francisco for eLifeList.com. In spring 2008, Im going out to San Francisco. Then I’m coming back to Boston.

This is my declaration of intent:

Im going to bike across the United States. I’ll go from coast to coast. San Francisco to Boston. I’ll do it in Spring 2008 with at least my friend and roommate Ben Winterroth.

Im excited at the prospect of pushing the limit of my physical endurance. Training started yesterday, and I can’t wait to do it.

We’re going to need a lot of help. Your encouragement is definitely welcome. So are any sponsorship opportunities!
