I learned about Mozy from your post a while back and subscribed. I had a bit of frustration for about a week as well, but then it took off and not only do I have almost 15GB backed up, but the incremental backups are, as expected, much faster. Once you get past the initial push it’s quite nice.

I also didn’t notice the resource hogging that you mentioned. I have a MacBook Pro 17 maxed out with 2GB of ram.

Jeremie, that’s great. Im not sure what was causing it for me. I’m still subscribed to the service. Maybe it’s worth giving it another shot before ditching. I’m also on a MB Pro (15) with 2GB ram.

Plenty of Mozy’s customers seem to be having issues, tons of these small online backup companies have issues. I went with Remote Backup Systems (RBS) to handle my data, very reliable service and an established player in the market.

I have had 13 GB backed up on Mozy for the last six months. Requested a restore on Friday night. Sunday night still no restore. Send email. Get response Monday morning - refering problem to manager. Tuesday lunch still no restore. Send email mildly expressing my frustration. Am told I am not being “professional”, Wednesday - finally able to download restore files. Attempt to open files - screen freezes and computer crashes. Try two more times same result. Send two email Wednesday afternoon - no response by late Wednesday night. Bottom line - it’s a rip off. Don’t pay, don’t use - find something better. Mozy Sucks!!

I’ve had similar trouble. I was able to backup the first 10GB or so, but now I get “MozyServerError11″ within a minute of starting a backup. I opened a “chat” on the support page and a rep said they’d have it fixed in 24 hours. It’s been 2 weeks and 2 unanswered emails since then. And based on the experiences of Chris and a few posts on other sites, it sounds like restoring is hit or miss as well.

“Hit or miss” is not a term I’d like to use to describe my backup solution.

Do not listen to anyone from Mozy. The product is terrible, the staff is terrible and their whole support process is terrible. 3 strikes and you’re out Mozy. I could go into how they screwed me over, but their are plenty of people on here that have given their testimony that Mozy sucks.

I’ve found XZ Backup (xzbackup.com) to be excellent, if you’re willing to pay that much (quite a bit pricier, but VERY fast, no bandwidth limits, and can be installed on all your computers at no additional charge. Clients for Win/Mac/Linux (I use all 3 so a big plus for me). I use it for my small business as well, which makes the price more justifiable.

I had a bit more then a bit 3 GB’s to backup. I have a fast internet connection (1500 Kbit/s upload), but mozy told me, that it takes 4 days for that, with an upload speed of 16Kbit/s (!). Meanwhile the two mozy services running in the background consumed together more than 40 % of both the 2.2 Ghz processors (!).
Since 3 days I tried to upload the files but somewhere in between mozy stopped uploading with an unspecified error saying there is an firewall problem. Ok- lets have a look at the log file: empty.
Ok I tried it again, and again, and again.
After reading your blogpost I finally found the solution:

I too have been VERY disappointed with Mozy. I’m PAYING for it for 2 computers, and one of the computers has never completed its initial backup. The other had problems since day 1. I wasted *weeks* waiting for replies and playing email tag with answers like “delete & reinstall the client.” I was once again charged full price. No real apology or anything. I’ve been paying for a service that has been totally unusable. *THEY* should be paying *ME* after having me download beta builds, email a bunch of log files, etc.

I’m about ready to scrap Mozy entirely.

Oh, and they *do* rate limit your uploads to right around 1mbit. Nowhere in their documentation is that little fact mentioned.

I’ve been a Mozy subscriber for about six months now and overall, like the rest of you, I have had a very poor poor experience. I’ve got around 170 GB to back up and sure, that’s a lot but that shouldn’t matter.

I’ve been more fortunate than the rest of you in that I’ve been able to upload a little more than 50 GB. The problem is though, even after six months, and countless errors, I’ve never been able to complete the initial backup.

For a while, I changed my approach and started with one directory and kept adding one at a time until Music and Photos were all that was left — albeit some of the most critical. It seemed to work terribly (but eventually, it would finish) until I included the photos and music — then it just didn’t work at all.

Even if it miraculously completed the full backup and the incremental backups thereafter worked perfectly, I’ve had so many errors and started and stopped this thing so many times that my faith in having a *reliable* backup with Mozy is nil.

I’ll give the 1.0 release a shot before I scrap it entirely but so far, _no good_. I just downloaded it and installed it and big surprise, it can’t contact the Mozy servers. I’ve been more than patient…

On a more positive note, the external hard drive I make a full backup to once a month (using .Mac Backup) and store off-site hasn’t let me down yet. I have a Time Capsule that works awesome too but it’s that whole “if the house burnt down” thing that it can’t handle. For online storage, I seemed to have pretty decent luck with JungleDisk (powered by Amazon’s S3 storage service).

Initially, I switched to Mozy from JungleDisk because of the sexy UI but all the UI sexiness in the world doesn’t mean a thing if you don’t have a reliable backup you can restore from.
